FAQ

What is a first Ministers Conference?

First Ministers Conferences are informal meetings between the Prime Minister and the Premiers in which they debate policy issues and try to come to agreements. There is no consistent schedule—they can be called anytime by the Prime Minister. Anything can be discussed at a FMC; however, they usually follow an agenda agreed upon by the participants.

Why do we need FIRST MINISTERS CONFERENCES?

Canada is a federal state. This means there are two levels of government (federal and provincial). Each level of government has different responsibilities. However, within these responsibilities, interests clash—especially when money gets involved! First Ministers Conferences allow the premiers and Prime Minister to discuss pressing issues and come to agreements.

How do First Ministers Conferences Usually operate?

Unlike the House of Commons or the United Nations, no strict procedure is generally followed. The Prime Minister usually chairs the meetings but, other than that, they can be as informal and chaotic as the participants want to make it!

Can I participate in the Simulation even if I don’t know anything about canadian politics?

Absolutely! Even if you have no prior knowledge but are wanting to learn more, we welcome you. This simulation is meant to be inclusive of all regardless of previous experience.

What roles can I play in the simulation?

You can represent the Prime Minister or the premiers or one of their deputies. You can also represent a mayor of a major city in Canada or a representative from the Assembly of First Nations (note that this position will only be assigned to a student with substantial prior knowledge of Indigenous issues). Finally, you can also play as a member of the left-wing or right-wing press.

What responsibilities will I have as a participant?

As a participant, you will be required to attend both days of the conference on Saturday, January 20th and Sunday, January 21st (no exceptions given). You will also be required to attend a mandatory orientation held on January 8th at 8pm (alternate arrangements can be made for students with class or other valid excuses).
